If you are faced with preserving toolmarks as evidence (marks from a variety of sources, including a break-and-enter tools, firing pins, and the casings of cartridges), you'll want to get a supply of Mikrosil Toolmark Putty and Casting Material. The dark brown colour of Mikrosil will tend to give you more detail in subsequent photographs. Mikrosil is easy to use: simply mix the putty from one tube with the catalyst from the other tube and press the mixture against the mark you want to preserve. You'll get several castings from one kit. Instructions are provided.
